The EU is funding a new climate research project called ICELINK. The project will investigate how climate change affects glaciers and ice caps in the North Atlantic.

  • It is a great recognition that the EU has chosen to support the ICELINK project. This project is a comprehensive research project in which Asiaq, together with research institutions from Iceland, Denmark, Austria, Belgium, Spain and Germany, will create new knowledge about the impact of climate change in Greenland and in the North Atlantic, says Mette Skarregaard Pedersen, CEO of Asiaq

The EU will support the ICELINK project with approximately DKK 55 million over the next four years. The funds are distributed among the research institutions participating in the project. Asiaqs will receive approximately DKK 5 million.

  • The interdisciplinary collaboration between the countries and across the researchers’ different disciplines will provide an even better understanding of the impact of climate change on glaciers and ice caps in the North Atlantic.

Asiaq employs several experienced researchers who have extensive knowledge of the specific environmental and climate conditions that characterize Greenland and the Arctic. In the project, the researchers will combine data from satellites, climate models, ice stream models and direct observations.

  • I am proud that we have such talented researchers employed at Asiaq. Our researchers have worked very hard to get to this point and for the application to the European Union to be successful. We are therefore very happy. It is so important that we ourselves are an active part of the climate research that is carried out in our country, so that we can help ensure that the research is of benefit to Greenland. With this funding from the European Union, we can now expand our research team and further strengthen our efforts.

The ICELINK project will start on 1 February 2025 and is expected to last for 4 years. Among other things, Asiaq will lead the part of the project that deals with ensuring that knowledge and products are targeted at Greenland’s needs.
